I think India and all need to calm down... India needs to focus on their growth. If they are not interested in US milk and fertilizers, so be it. Realign after 3 years once Trump is gone. Leaning towards China will be a wrong strategy... I think... By and large, this is a unilateral decision and not the US overall. So don't make it worse.. Even domestically, lots of people are agitated and not happy, and things will come out. I mean, we are just talking about $80 billion trade with the US VS 500 billion+  with Mexico, Canada, and China. Are they happy with the current situation? No, so have patience. The World economy, not just India, will go through a stress test from 2026 to 2033. India is doing great, and so are others.

Aside from offshoring of tech I’m guessing the next step for Trump will be a tax on remittances by expat Indians to India. 50% tax on the 125 billion sent back annually. India imports about 4-6 billion of U.S. steel and aluminum. So a tidy profit of 56 billion after subsidizing U.S. steel and aluminum companies. Here’s the thing, Trump is addressing an imbalance in trade that has existed since after WW2, at least in his mind. In this case he isn’t likely to blink.

It’s obvious that Trump is trying to bully India, using every trick to pressure us. We’ve been negotiating trade back and forth for years, but his push into our agriculture market was completely unacceptable. And then there’s the F-35 issue, which is another matter, but clearly shows he doesn’t care about India’s interests. Since our economy relies heavily on agriculture, allowing free access would have been disastrous. Ignoring him would have been submissive, but India seems to be responding smartly with tariffs and technical measures. Of course, this will affect markets in both India and the US, but sometimes you have to push back to protect national interests.

There are two things going on here at the same time: 

**1).)** U.S. is looking for an excuse to renegotiate trade with India. Both sides have been trying to negotiate a trade deal for quite some time, but there are huge issues: India will not sell out its agricultural base and the U.S. can’t really put tariffs on digital services from India the way it can physical imports from other nations. This makes India extremely difficult to negotiate with but at the same time, extremely important for America to strike a deal with before India erodes America’s white collar base without giving reciprocal access to its consumer market. You simply can’t put tariffs on your IT guy in Bangalore the way you can car parts from Germany because no physical good is crossing a physical border.

What’s happening now is that the gloves are coming off: America is trying to play hardball and express displeasure with India. The problem is that India is just in the flat out superior negotiating position. America may have a technology edge but this is being eroded and India is trending towards further expansion economically and in terms of human capital. Withholding technological transfer to India will not work, because the technological gatekeeping the U.S. used in the past is already being eroded by China. If the U.S. continues then it opens up the U.S. to IP/technological theft not just from China but India as well, which will be fatal to U.S. domestic industry. 

The U.S. should have renegotiated trade deals with China and India after the 2008 financial crisis but both the Chinese and the Indians were too effective at stalling the negotiations to the point that now they have the upper hand. Now they are trying to make up for lost time and doing too much from too weak of a bargaining position. 

**2.)** The bigger issue is that the recent India - Pakistan conflict exposed America’s position. During the conflict Pakistan could reliably count on diplomatic support from Turkey, China, **and America**. India received no support at all from the Quad during this conflict. The IMF even financially bailed Pakistan out during the conflict and Trump/Vance attempted to mediate on behalf of Pakistan while equivocating the two sides internationally. For India, this was a massive red line. 

Subsequently, Trump invited General Asif Munir (ie not Pakistan’s PM) to the White House to negotiate using Pakistani airspace to bomb Iran. This demonstrated to India that the U.S. simply will never give up Pakistan. 

So now India in a position where it sees that the U.S. is not only unreliable diplomatically but that it will always prioritize relations with its mortal enemy *and* that will try to impede India’s technological development further. 

I’d argue that all of this was very predictable.

I’m not sure there’s much I can add here that hasn’t been said already. It’s a huge mistake for the US to antagonise both India and Brazil at the same time, especially since it’s for idiotic reasons in the first place. 

The best way to get both nations to limit their trade with Russia is to offer them long term stable commitments that help improve them. India has a population of well over 1.4 billion and one that is still growing. 

The other way to get those countries to limit their trade with Russia is to let them see that Russia is an unreliable partner and one that isn’t capable of offering much. That’s something they need to experience on their own terms and not be subject to threats of sanctions or tariffs. 

Biden had a much better grasp of geopolitics.

The Indian logic of buying Russian oil is it is simply pursuing its interests. ‘We do balancing, it’s the cheapest option and our economy takes precedence, Ukraine is not our fight’. Fair enough.

The US logic is it is simply pursuing its own interests. ‘We have an opportunity to humble Russia and protect Ukraine, India’s support of Russia enables them and imposes costs on the US in terms of military aid and posture’. Fair enough. If Russia can be stopped the US can get troops out of Europe quicker.

India’s economy is pretty well shielded from the US. They just aren’t the same economies. India has way more to gain from cheap Russian oil than it has to gain from a trade relationship with the US. Now if the US were to impose tariffs on outsourced cheap labor, that’s a different story.

India's exports to the US are about $130 billion in a $3.9 trillion dollar economy. Trump assumes a level of dependency that doesn't exist.  They have a long history of remaining unaligned, and Modi is a nationalist.  I don't know anything about Indian politics, but can Modi afford to look weak? India has cancelled or at least put on hold the $ 3.8 billion order for 6 additional P-8I maritime patrol aircrafts. This single deal alone is roughly equivalent to 10% of the \~ $ 40 billion annual Indian exports hit by the tariffs.

India's three largest airlines have total of 410 Boeing airplanes on order which have value of $ 70 billion. This in total is the total annual Indian export to USA.

In addition, there is the Stryker deal, the Javelin deal etc. which now will likely not go through.

India doesn't sell goods to the US, it sells services, services don't have tariffs, Trump's tariff scare tactic won't work on India for this single reason, tariffs might as well be 250% or 1000%, it won't have the same result on India as it would have on countries like Canada or Mexico.

Having seen the China playbook, India hopes the tariffs will go away or put in abeyance until the next round of talks are concluded. The team is arriving in India August 25th- India has supposedly agreed to lower tariffs on most but not on 2 particular categories, Agriculture and Dairy. 

Agriculture and Dairy are the 2 biggest redlines - still a very farming driven economy it needs to safeguard its large farmer base. Unlike the US where farming happens by corporations, India has a much more fragmented system. India is pushing back strongly against the use of GMO crops and the use of dairy where blood meal is involved (majority of Hindus are vegetarians).

Trade comes after national security and strategic interests. What started as a casual tug-of-war has now escalated into a serious confrontation, and Trump doesn’t appear mature enough to grasp that—let alone start working to fix things.

Just with the events of the past week or so, India is re-evaluating its long-term security posture for the next decade in response to these developments.

Trump was clearly chasing a flashy headline from the trade deal, similar to what happened with South Korea on rice and beef. In India's case, he wanted to crack open access to dairy and grain markets.

His attempts to pressure India have been just as immature. First, he seemed to think that cozying up to Pakistan would corner India—evident in a string of Pakistan-related remarks and engagements.

Then suddenly, and seemingly out of nowhere, he played the Russian oil card.
Let’s not forget — Russian oil isn’t under blanket sanctions. Other countries are still buying it without facing consequences, so the issue clearly isn't about purchasing the oil. It's just a pretext for applying pressure.

All the progressive values the West claims to uphold in the 21st century — awareness of gender identity, animal rights, and so on — quickly fall away when dealing with countries that can’t push back (that's what they think, at the moment). It reflects a lingering colonial mindset: suppress those who can’t defend themselves (and they might have miscalculated this time). China isn’t in the same position simply because it holds powerful leverage.

India will remember this episode as yet another chapter in a long history of pressure and double standards from the West.
